 About YouthSafe

' Our primary focus is to raise awareness among young workers of occupational health and safety issues in the workplace.'

YouthSafe is an initiative of the Labor Council of NSW. It was established in response to the ongoing statistical evidence showing a high incidence of accidents involving young people at work. Bob Car (Premier of NSW) officially launched Youthsafe in May 1997 at the Olympic Stadium construction site.

The YouthSafe Committee consists of representatives from a diverse range of industries and backgrounds including: clerical, nursing, hospitality, retail, metal trades and construction as well as apprentices, trainees, school students and university students.

Our primary focus is to raise the awareness among young workers (and future young workers) of the occupational health and safety issues in the workplace, their rights and responsibilities as an employee and the responsibilities of their employer. In order to further this aim the YouthSafe Committee seeks to:

  • To develop and publish material targeted specifically at young people, educating them on the importance of workplace safety.
  • To produce papers and submissions for government and industry which highlight workplace safety issues affecting young people.
  • To market the message regarding the importance of workplace health and safety by producing material which presents information in a way that appeals to young people.
  • To evaluate these, and other, strategies and advise government and industry on their effectiveness.
  • To target schools in particular, as an appropriate level at which to first introduce young people to the message regarding workplace health and safety.

Within this site you will find a range of information regarding young people and health and safety at work including case studies, submissions, press releases and policies.
